Top 10 Professional Skills a CTO Should Have

The CIO is a member of the company's management team who oversees the organization's IT department. One of its goals is to continue maintaining and improving the organization's internal technological processes as a way of maximizing the company's productivity and increasing the ability to perform complex tasks through automation. They must also ensure that technical functionality supports the CEO's overall strategic vision.



To maintain a productive work environment, the CIO needs versatile skills to help you navigate in an ever-changing environment. Here are some more traditional skills that might come in handy:


1. Leadership: Since CIOs are responsible for managing the IT department and its people, they need a deeper understanding of executive leadership and initiative that goes well beyond being a manager.


2. Communication: Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills are required. Conducting presentations and sharing information at all levels of the organization on policies and projects requires commitment skills. CIOs also need to be active and effective learners, capable of dealing with a variety of personalities and scenarios.


3. Organization: Managing and executing multiple projects across multiple teams and departments requires strong organizational skills complemented by fluent communication.


4. Technical Depth: As heads of IT, CIOs need specialist knowledge in technological areas such as understanding networks and architecture. In some cases, the role may require greater technical skills such as Object Oriented Programming (OOP), and advanced multi-language coding to enable you to participate in advanced IT projects.


5. Budget Practices: As mentioned, one of the CIO's responsibilities is to oversee the department's budget and make the appropriate investments. For this reason, those in this role must have financial and accounting skills and a clear understanding of how to use the budget to get the most benefit.


6. Project management and implementation: Your management tasks include overseeing departmental projects and motivating employees to make meaningful contributions. The CIO must be able to lead a team of professionals with different work habits and areas of expertise and place them in the positions where they are most effective. While not required, proficiency in project management or other methodology is a plus.


7. Risk management: They must be able to identify potential areas that may be vulnerable to cybersecurity breaches and apply preventive measures to keep their business data safe.


8. Building Relationships: Business ties with other organizational chart leaders mean that the CIO must be committed to creating a profitable balance of business services and demonstrate dedication to the business. CIOs need to focus on this type of relationship building.


9. Team Development: The CIO needs to build a strong team and improve work. Being able to focus your team on business performance, not just delivery times is essential.


10. Careful vendor management: More than reducing operational costs by negotiating service level agreements and service level agreements (SLAs). The CIO needs to understand when to abandon the traditional vendor roadmap in favour of new niche solutions.
