The role of a software project manager

What is Software Project Management?

Project management software is dedicated to planning, scheduling, resource allocation, implementation, tracking and delivery of web and software projects.

Software engineering project management is different from traditional project management: project management software has a unique lifecycle process that requires multiple rounds of testing, updates, and customer feedback. Most IT projects are handled in an agile style to keep pace with the growing pace of business and are iterated based on customer and stakeholder feedback.

The role and responsibilities of a software project manager

Software project managers may need to perform any of the following tasks:

Planning: The software project manager creates a master plan for the entire project. The project plan defines the scope, required resources, schedule, execution process, communication strategy, and required testing and maintenance phases.

Manager: The software project manager assembles and leads a project team consisting of developers, analysts, testers, graphic designers, and technical writers. Leading a team requires excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.

Implementation: The person who leads software projects oversees the proper implementation of each phase of the project. This includes tracking progress, conducting recurring team check-ins, and generating status reports.

Time Management: Meeting deadlines is critical to the success of any project. This can be particularly difficult in software project management, where changes to the original plan are almost guaranteed as the project progresses. Software project managers must be experts in risk management and contingency planning to ensure progress in the face of obstacles or changes.

Budget: Like traditional project managers, software project management professionals are responsible for creating a project budget and following it as closely as possible, controlling expenses and reallocating funds as needed.

Maintenance: Software project management encourages continuous product testing to find and fix bugs early, adapt the end product to customer needs, and keep the project on track. The Software Project Manager ensures that the product is correctly and consistently tested, evaluated and adjusted accordingly.
